Getting Started
Updated: Jun 5, 2019
OK, so where to begin?
I guess the first step is to make a list of what fun things we can do this summer.
Here's my initial brainstorming....
Hiking - the woods behind our house offers plenty of fun hiking for our age group
Biking - Ethan is able to ride a two wheeler but only in five-ten foot bursts
Swimming - Dylan wants to improve his freestyle stroke, Ethan and Noah need to learn to swim, or at least doggie paddle across the pool.
Backyard camping - Our house is adjacent to the woods. We routinely have foxes, raccoons, and deer in the back yard so for us, backyard camping is already pretty wild.
Build wooden boats to sail in our neighborhood creek
Field trips - to the zoo, Smithsonian museums, canoeing at the state park.
Watch rocket launch - Wallops Island, VA, is only a three hour drive from our house and a great place to see (unmanned) rocket launches to the international space station and other points up. Surprisingly, the NASA website is not updated very often, and I cannot figure out when the next Wallops Island launch is. Homework for another day.
Build a model rocket (and find a safe launch/recovery area for them)
Backyard pool - somedays its just easier to set up the ol' inflatable pool then trekking to our local pool. Plus, ours has a built in waterslide so the boys will play all day in it.
Obstacle courses - We just started watching Ultimate Beastmaster on Netflix -- very similar to American Ninja -- and the boys are all in! They are ready to build a full scale version in the backyard. I think we'll start with something smaller but I love that they think big. :)
Outdoor arts and crafts....maybe less crafts and more art....and by art I mean them coloring outside while I nap in the hammock.
And of course....I have a gigantic home maintenance 'to do' list from my beautiful wife, which I'm sure they will help with, right? Right?
What else am I missing. Post your ideas in the comments and I will add on!
